STUDY DAYS
The
Association organises two study days each year.
Members attend the study day at a reduced cost although non-members are
always most welcome. Each study day
provides an opportunity for those attending to experience a Balint style seminar. All groups are
facilitated by experienced leaders from the Association
of Psychosexual Nursing.
Study day on Saturday November 8th 2008 at the University of Surrey, Guildford
Duke
of Kent building. A campus map is available at www.surrey.ac.uk
Intimate examinations and the
examination of intimacy;
managing the difficulties of working with the body, mind and emotions in everyday practice
Presenters will be drawing on their experience and case studies to introduce and explore ways in which we can open up and talk about the issues that we face in our day to day work with patients whose psychosexual wellbeing may be affected.
Helen
Allen is a registered nurse, registered nurse teacher and senior research
fellow at the University of Surrey. She will talk on issues around intimate
female examination and chaperoning. She will be looking at how we defend
ourselves against the anxiety that these situations can make us feel.
Judith Walker is a registered nurse who has worked in Primary Care for many years. She is the screening development nurse in Westminster PCT. She will be talking about her experiences in introducing psychosexual issues to nurses in Primary Care.

Previous study days: (for information)
10th November 2007, Bedford Medical Institute, Bedford Hospital NHS Trust,
'Undressing sexual issues in every day practice'
Considering sexual history taking and the potential of the intimate examination
Speakers information:
Bridget Taylor is a Senior Lecturer Oxford Brookes University and also works as palliative care nurse at Sir Michael Sobell House Hospice. Her varied nursing experience includes coronary care, HIV and primary care. She is currently engaged in research that explores sexuality in life limiting illness, considering the perspectives of both patients and partners.
In her presentation 'How can I address sexuality and sexual health? Explicitly or Ex-PLISSITly? Bridget recognises that sexuality and sexual health are, for many nurses, difficult and potentially embarrassing areas to address with patients. Sometimes it is easy to ignore these areas altogether if the patient doesn't raise the subject. This presentation will discuss some useful tools to help nurses and will provide many practical examples of how to broach the subject of sexual health with patients. These will help to equip nurses, regardless of the speciality , to address sexuality in their everyday work.
Vaginal examinations are a routine procedure in gynaecological and sexual health clinics, and yet can cause anxiety and discomfort to the patient/client. Mary Stewart is a practising midwife and research Associate at the University of West England, who has recently completed her Doctorate which is entitled " Midwives and women's discourses of vaginal examinations in labour". Mary has written that " Despite its routine nature , little attention has been paid to the experiences of those undergoing or performing the vaginal examination. In particular, no research has been carried out to explore who has power and control over decision making about the procedure" this is with particular reference to women in labour. Her research has set out to look at these issues.
Wendy Hurn a Urology Specialist Practitioner, has lectured widely on problems that men may have to deal with when faced with sexual difficulties.
Paula Pheby trained as a 'professional patient' in gynaecological examination in 2001 as part of a research study at KCL in London. After 3 years as a Gynaecology Teaching Associate with KCL Paula started UK-GTA as an independent company. UK-GTA ltd offer teaching of the technical and interpersonal skills needed to perform competent and sensitive speculum examination, smear taking, swab taking for STIs, bimanual examination and fitting of contraceptive diaphragms. The company emphasise the patient perspective on all intimate examinations. In 2007 Paula qualified as a Registered Nurse and has applied for membership of the Academy of Medical Educators.
'Sexuality, Intimacy and Identity across the lifespan' Saturday 12th May 2007 9.30-16.30
The Centre for Health and Care
Soho Square London W1V 5DH
Speakers information:
Hazel Heath, Theresa Nash and Diane Wells are all dynamic nurses now working in education and research, at this study day they will, from their considerable experience, bring insights into this most complex topic. The programme will be of interest to all health care professionals because these words describe emotive issues at all ages and stages of our human development. While a great deal of attention is given to these issues for people under 50 there is not so much time devoted to those over 50 and beyond. The Speakers and presenters from the Association of Psychosexual Nursing will address this topic from a number of perspectives.
Hazel
Heath is an Independent Nurse Consultant, and Visiting Senior Research Fellow
City University London. Her
independent commissions have included projects for the Department of Health,
Nursing and Midwifery Council and Royal College of Nursing.
Appointments include Senior Teacher in Nursing Theory and Practice at
Barts in London, Chair of the RCNs Association for Nurses working with Older
People, a year as the RCNs Adviser on Nursing and Older People and five years
as the Editor of Nursing Older People journal. All aspects related to sexuality in
later life have remained a focus of Hazels work.
Theresa
Nash a principal lecturer and Diane
Wells a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences (FHSCS),
Kingston University and St Georges University of London (KU/SGUL) will
jointly present :Caring
for sexuality across the life spanPromoting knowledge and skills among
student nurses
Diane
Wells a senior lecturer, researcher and writer has developed the programme for
the Study Day writes that in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses she
encourages students to reflect on their clinical experience to promote awareness
and to help them develop skills to work with emotions. She has been closely
involved with the work of the Association for many years and edited Caring
for Sexuality in Illness and Health written by Doreen Clifford, Jane Selby
and Marjorie Rutter.
Theresa
Nash is a Knowledge Exchange Fellow for the WestFocus Health Network and a
co-opted member of the national forum committee for the Royal College of Nursing
Adolescent Health Forum. Her background is in public health nursing with a focus
on the needs of young people and she works a session a week as a sexual health
nurse for Lewisham PCT. However Theresa as a facilitator of learning has
been involved in developing modules in relation to sexual health and sexuality,
public health and health promotion and adolescent health. She is particularly
interested in creating inspiring opportunities to develop shared learning. She
is involved in many projects both directly focussed on service users but on
projects that offer information and support to those who deliver the service.
Information about our speakers books and publications will be available at the Study Day. We look forward to seeing you there. We would encourage members to stay for the AGM.

Discussion with Panel
Do you ever wonder why a number of patients/clients
with physical or sexual symptoms dont respond to the usual care, treatment
and reassurance that you offer in practice? Why do they keep coming back?
This years London based study day is for all health
care professionals who are keen to explore an exciting and effective approach
with these individuals. We aim to focus on the bodys ability to communicate,
there will be time to examine some of your own case encounters in a Balint-style
seminar and following our speakers, to join the discussion, taking away shared
new thinking and ideas for use in future practice.
In the
morning session Jean Penman Chair of the Association will present her findings
from an empirical research study she undertook from 2000-2002 as part of her MSc
in the Psychodynamics of Human Development with the British Association of
Psychotherapists and Birkbeck College (Jungian stream). Jeans research
interest arose from seeing how physical symptoms improved or disappeared
altogether whilst seeing patients in a psychosexual counselling clinic. Her
presentation is entitled Working with
the unresponsive somatic symptom-if you
have eyes to see and ears to hear...
The research
has shown some fascinating patterns. From
these Jean will present her findings and develop a new framework for thinking
about the way we work with individuals with a somatic symptom. This represents
an opportunity for developing clinical skills, which might be applied usefully
in varying degrees across all practice settings
Jean
undertook her l nurse training at St.Bartholomews, London. She worked both in
acute and
chronic
practice settings and later trained as a Health Visitor. During the mid 1980s
Jean began training in psychosexual awareness with Jane Selby and Doreen
Clifford and has since gone on to develop a
county-wide psychosexual counselling service for Luton PCT. Jean is an
accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (
BACP).
In the
afternoon, Angela Cotter will continue with the theme of the day and will
present a mixture of theory and practice under the title of
'The practitioner's somatic experience in the
clinical encounter: whose problem?'
Angela Cotter is a nurse by background, working initially in women's health and health education in the Marie Stopes, Margaret Pyke and Brook Clinics. In more recent years, she worked with and for older people, clinically and in management, education and action research. She is the current Ferguson Fellow at Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre exploring the spirituality of the wounded healer, developing ideas first set out in her doctorate in 1990 about holism and nurses' own experience of severe acute and chronic illness. Alongside this she practices as a Jungian analytical psychotherapist privately and in the voluntary sector; and as an organisational consultant specialising in residential care settings. The common theme in all her work is relationship-centred care and its impact on the body-soul of each person involved. Angela frequently presents papers to clinical and academic nurses and has worked closely with all grades and disciplines of clinical staff on action research projects in the workplace.

There is again the opportunity to take part in Psychosexual awareness seminars: for those who have participated in seminars in the past it is the way to retain full membership status within the Association. For new people it is a chance to gain an insight into this method of working. The focus of the group is about the 'work' we do with patients, it is not about self disclosure about personal feelings/sexuality. For information about seminar groups go to Balint Seminars .
